Artist's Description

"Galactic Path to the Big Coulee Lutheran Church"
I had a clear and dark sky opportunity to shoot the "summer" Milky Way when I was up in ND recently, so one of the foregrounds I chose was the Big Coulee Lutheran Church in a remote part of Ramsey County, ND. The rising waning crescent moon provided most of the foreground light, along with some light painting from a small flashlight. The skies are very dark in that area due to low population density caused by Devils Lake flooding (a ~15 year event..), so the milky way is stunningly visible even with naked eye. You may recall the image I posted a while back of Comet Neowise at this location - that was looking north - this one is looking south towards our galactic center, which is located just to the left of the church entrance door. The VERY bright "star" is actually planet Jupiter. I also shot a tall vertical format version which is available here ("big coulee" keyword and you'll see it and
many more).

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
