Artist's Description

"Little Schoolhouse on the Prairie"
This idyllic one-room schoolhouse rests on a beautiful hillside site above the Tasker coulee which flows slowly by below it (NW of Minot near Burlington in Ward County). I can find little information on this school, except what I linked to in a comment (Kirkelie Township school). I think the children back in the 40's and 50's (?) must have loved coming to this beautiful place from the surrounding farms for their classes. I can almost envision them fishing in the coulee during recess breaks in spring and fall, and then ice-skating upon it in the winter. It is sad that this school, and history will soon fall to ruin - it seems like it could have been so easily converted into a special little place/park for community gatherings, picnics, etc. Another image, viewed from above is also available (search for same title)
Images captured 8/5/19.

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
