I used various combinations of "twirl-distortions" on the summer milky way to create this Van Gogh-like Starry Night rendition of a prior image in my collection.

While up in ND helping with harvest, I went to a nearby abandoned barn (south of Leeds) to shoot some nightscapes on very clear night, so the Milky Way was glowing spectacularly, as it does from dark-sky sites like this. On some of the shots, I lit the exterior and interior of the barn by walking around with a very dim flashlight during the long (2 minute) stationary exposure used for the foreground. The star part of the scenes are created by combining ~6 30 second exposures where the camera tracks the sky motion, else the stars become streaks. Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI.
