Artist's Description
"Big Coulee Lutheran"
I can 't make a trip home to ND without taking at least ONE photograph of one of my favorite subjects - this grand old abandoned Norwegian Lutheran church, found on the prairie south of Churchs Ferry, ND. It was built 1934 and shut down in the early 70's, I believe. I have been photographing it for about a decade - search "Big Coulee" on my gallery page to see a large collection of my best work from this location!
I have found, in the past year of playing with my new infrared camera technology, that my favorite time to go shoot with it is when the skies are gloomy and threatening rain, but the foliage/grass still glows brilliantly in IR, and the sky looks like something from a dream. Not a "happy look", but for subjects like this, I think can be just about perfect.
Image captured 7/5/22 with infrared-modified Pentax K-3 camera at >720nm wavelength.
About Peter Herman
Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
