Description
Augustana Swedish Lutheran Church Series - North Dakota abandoned rural church
One of my stops on a quick photo-shooting circuit in east-central ND in September 2020 was this very beautiful and unique rural church in Eddy County about 7 miles SW of Sheyenne, ND. The church is of heavy stone/masonry construction vs. typical wood frame usually found on the ND prairie. The Swedish immigrants and settlers that built this (likely in early 1900's) must have been very dedicated to their faith and rightfully proud of their house of worship. It was probably decommissioned in the mid 80's (my estimate) due mainly to declining rural population, and it appears there have been some effort(s) to renovate/maintain it (a sign in the basement photo suggests so). If the roof is kept sound, it will last for centuries, being of such solid stone construction - like the old churches of Europe, but the interior shot reveals some pending troubles. Several shots are available of this subject - simply search for "Augustana Swedith Lutheran" on my page.
