Artist's Description

I had been driving by this old barn south of McFarland with the "Chew Tobacco" advertisement painted on its north face (Tobacco is almost faded/illegible now) for YEARS, intending to stop and shoot it "sometime". I finally took the time to pull over practically into the ditch (US 51 is VERY busy, and this location is on a hill) and get out to shoot some pics. I was putting my camera gear back into car and Murphy started barking excitedly- I turned around and this pretty old girl had wandered up to the fence. I quickly ran back and took the "best" picture of the batch (all the other shots had no cows!).
NOTE - a square-format version is also available.

Image captured 4/15/19 with Pentax K-1 with DFA100mm lens.

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
