Description
"The Florin Homestead"
This beautiful abandoned farm site, tucked away on a backroad in eastern ND (Barnes County), was homesteaded by a Joseph Florin family. 1910 plat map shows a one-room school just 1/2 mile south that his children likely walked to (the school is now gone). He must have been quite successful, based upon the large number of granaries and the large barn, plus the plat map acreage owned/farmed by him, of almost 700 acres (in two townships). Interestingly, by 1928, the property is in the hands of a trustee so Mr Florin either died or moved elsewhere. By 1958, it was owned by an A H Gregory.
One of my Facebook photography page followers found a wealth of additional information and shared it-
The "1885 State Census" lists a 26 year old Joseph Florin living in Valley City, Barnes Cty, ND. Joseph is single and he was born in Wisconsin around 1859. Then in the 1900 Federal Census, Joseph Florin is listed as being a 39 year old single Farmer in Pierce Township, Barnes County, ND. Living nearby is Fred and Mary "Etter". In 1910 Joseph Florin is 48 years old and still farming in Pierce Township and the Etters are still living close by. What is interesting is that Joseph is listed as being married, but his wife is not listed. This could be a mistake from the census taker or Joseph's wife is living somewhere else. Perhaps he worked too hard at farming. 🙂 In 1920 "Joe Florin is still farming in Pierce township and he owns his farm, but "un" is written in the spot about regarding a mortgage or free from a mortgage. And Joe (Joseph) is single again! Sadly, Joseph Florin passed away 3 years later on Sept. 14, 1923. Joseph Florin was born Feb 20, 1860 in Buffalo Cty, Wisconsin and from what I have found, Joseph was the only Florin from his immediate family who settled in Barnes County, ND. Joseph's parents were Andrew and Susanna Florin and they along with some of Joseph's siblings are buried in the Montana Methodist Church Cemetery in Buffalo Cty, Wisconsin.
