Description
This is second in a pair of images that are something of a "time lapse" shot through chicken coop window of the Stensby homestead in Benson County, ND. The images are captured in opposing seasons and are separated by seven years. In the first image (search for #1 of same title), taken Dec 2014, the level of Devils Lake is near its high point. FYI Devils Lake is a closed-basin lake, and slowly but steadily rose some 25' over period of almost two decades starting in about 1995, flooding hundreds of thousands of acres and destroying many farms and even towns in the region. Its a little hard to see under the snow, but the tree is "in the water" of Devils Lake (ice) and the cattails are at shoreline. The second image (this one) , taken Jun 15, 2021 shows that the shoreline has receded away from the tree, dropping about 5' thus far, as dryer conditions have begun to prevail again. This is a lake that "breathes" with the climate, and has been doing so for millenia (I'll post a link in comment to some detailed hydrology info). If you have followed my work, you'll recognize the location - I have shot/posted hundreds of images from this general area over the decades including a recent series I posted taken entirely with an iPhone, just for fun! I'll post a picture from circa 1980 as a comment to this post, showing the farm when it was still occupied and operational.
