Artist's Description

It was -20F (-29C) when I shot this image just after sunrise at the Yahara river, so the icy cold water, still running, but freezing up rapidly, was "steaming" into the much colder air and creating a surreal fog which gave the scene great depth and atmosphere. As I captured these three images, the absolute silence struck me. My camera shutter sounded loud and foreign in the stillness. The only sounds, aside from me, was the occasional thudding of ice chunks as they jostled against each other like bumper cars on their slow-motion liquid race track. Note the loon (?) swimming in the water near far shore. Location is a few miles south of Stoughton, WI on Stebbinsville road downstream from the dam.

Captured on 1/27/2019 with Pentax K-1 and DFA28-105 lens

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
