Description
Homestead of Danish immigrant Lars Peder Hansen, born 1859 in Denmark and immigrated here (Benson County ND), likely to take advantage of homestead act - ND homesteading claims peaked in 1908, at about 14,000 in that year. My father recalled that "a big dane" lived in the house when he was young (in ~1940), but it has been vacant for at least 60 years now. Lars is shown as owner of this quarter-section on a 1910 plat map. I don't know if he was married and/or had family, but as you can see, there are some initials written on chimney that suggest so.. This house is now along shore of (massively expanded) Devils lake, which has risen about 30' from the time when he built it, likely around 1910. A few years ago, the house was nearly at lake water level. This house is very near the "Stensby" house (about 0.15 miles SE) so I have included it in that collection, despite being a separate homestead..
