I love this image. The long exposure works so well and the clarity of the old wood is so dynamic. Glad you've captured it before it is gone.

Peter Herman replied:

Thanks so much! I've shot quite a lot here- it just begs to be photographed. But yes, it will soon be collapsed and then gone. A reminder of our short dance on this rock.

Artist's Description

This is the iconic and oft-photographed Hurricane Lake Lutheran church, in an advanced state of decay, located near Hurricane Lake in Pierce County ND. I used a very dark filter to enable a long 3-minute exposure which rendered the puffy altocumulus clouds into these wispy streaks due to their motion.

Sadly, this old beauty won't stand much longer. I have several other image options of this church - search for "Hurricane Lake" or similar title to locate them on my page.

Image captured July 6, 2017 with Pentax K-1 and 28-105 lens at 45mm (so a "normal" perspective view, as if standing in the cemetery area).

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
