This "Icehenge" structure has become a tradition for past few years, and is built by hand by a small group of friends led by a Lake MIlls local, Kevin Lehner, working with hand saws cutting blocks of ice out of the very lake it is built upon (sounds like hard work!!). I raced there after work (25 miles from my home), trying to beat the sunset, parked at the beach area and started walk/running about 3/4 mile through deep snow/slush (with about 3" water underneath which was rather unnerving - my dog was a bit nervous too!). I'm getting too old for this... Anyway, I got there in nick of time and started shooting, staying 'til past sunset (see other images/variations). This image is a composite of foreground image layered with night sky, shot at different time but in correct general position/orientation/time. Shot on 2/1/19 with Pentax K-1 and Rokinon 12mm fisheye (de-fished) from snow surface
Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
