Artist's Description

"Late Bloomers 1 of 2" - Prairie Crocus on coulee hill, after blooming
Due to the very cold spring in North Dakota this year, this is the latest I remember prairie crocus blooming. Usually they've bloomed about a month or more sooner (as I recall). Anyway, I learned something new- after the flower is done blooming and the sepals fall off, the pistils create a "new" flower that looks kind of like a little exploding firework that is as pretty as the original bloom (zoom in on these!)! A seed is attached to each plume. I have uploaded two examples to my gallery - search "late bloomer" to see both!

Image captured 5/22/22 on my favorite "crocus hill" in Benson County, ND, near Brinsmade, with Pentax K-1 and DFA50mm macro lens.

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota, where his love for photography first took root during high school. After starting his 32 year engineering career at Cummins, Peter’s photography interests went dormant until 2005, when he purchased his first DSLR. Many of his images are discovered while riding his...
