Description
"Lunar Power"
This old windmill on the abandoned Knutson farmhouse near Brinsmade (Benson County ND) is still turning (but not pumping) after at least 5 decades of abandonment. It was a bit eerie being out there at night during this full moon as it squeaks and squawks on each turn. Zoom in (use full scale preview feature) to view the bullet holes accumulated over the decades through the tail fin!
Tech stuff- The turning windmill actually gave me a photographic predicament - inability to get moon and windmill in sharp focus. Normally, I could use small lens aperture to get adequate depth of focus, but that comes with long shutter speed and windmill blades would have been a complete blur. Another way I often accomplish this is "depth focus stack", combining two or more images at different focus positions, but in this case BOTH the moon and windmill are moving, so composite ends up as a mismatched mess. So I opted for sharp focus on the windmill (and blurry moon) and shutter speed to give slightly blurry windmill blades to show their motion.
Image captured 10/7/22 with Pentax K1 and DA*300mm lens
