Artist's Description

"Old Boot, New Sol"
This one is in the "things that make you scratch your head" department - alongside a rural gravel road in Benson County ND, I saw a metal post with this boot on it in ditch next to a corn field. Sometimes farmers put boots on wood posts to protect them from rain, but a metal post needs no such protection, so this was purely an act of "agricultural art". I decided to return the favor by photographing it, and did so hurriedly, shooting a boring "straight on" shot with the sun behind me. As I got back into the pickup, I realized that I could do better, so went back and carefuly set up a shot where the sun (Sol) was peeking through the holes, giving the boot a badly-needed new Sol!

Image captured 10/1/22.

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
