"Prairie Sentinel" (plus variations - search by same name)
I stumbled upon this long-abandoned elevator SE of Cando on a sunny warm late August day a few years back when I was running an errand with my Dad at the Cando Farmers Co-op. I ventured back to shoot it again last week in different conditions (understatement!). The gravel road getting there was covered in glossy ice so slippery that I couldn't stand up on it, and it blew the car sideways (luckily I was going very slowly). The funniest part of this was that Google Maps, to save a mile or two, was trying to direct me down several section-line grass-rut roads that were 2' deep in snow and barely passable in SUMMER conditions, and I took the bait like a fool, and had to backtrack! I guess I've been away from ND too long! I'll include the earlier autumn image for comparison.

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
