Description
Quarry Waterfalls at Daggett Memorial park in Montello, WI - 3 of 3
I had to pick my son up at the train depot in Portage, so I drove a few extra miles north to visit the Daggett memorial park quarry in Montello, with the waterfalls. So glad I did - it is really a beautiful place, and the community should be proud of having this right smack-dab in the middle of their town! The falls are located at what used to be a very large/deep (150') granite quarry. The granite from this quarry which once employed several hundred people was claimed to be the hardest granite in the world and was used for several famous monuments, such as Grant's tomb. Now, the quarry is water-filled, and they pump numerous waterfalls form the reservoir, which makes for picturesque photo-ops... The little "tiny church" at the top is a memorial for a church which was once on the site but apparently removed due to quarry activity.
