Artist's Description
"River of Gold" - Geese overwintering at an icy bend in Yahara River, Wisconsin
I love this spot on Yahara (Ho-Chunk indian word meaning "Catfish") where it takes a lazy "S" turn. I keep an eye on places like this for advantageous sunset/sunrise alignments, which in this case, occurs near winter solstice (putting sunset behind the scene). I ventured out on this evening (1/23/22) on the chance that the sunset might be colorful, and was thrilled to find that the color reflected so beautifully in the icy water, making it look like flowing molten gold. The flock of geese clustering in the brighter lit bend, plus coming in for landings from above was truly the icing on this icy winter cake!
Image captured with Pentax K-1 using Rokinon 135mm f2 lens (one of my very sharpest pieces of glass - I call it my "optical scalpel").
About Peter Herman
Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
