Artist's Description

"School's Out Forever"
Shortly before I shot the Tunbridge Scandinavian Lutheran church (Image posted yesterday), I stopped at the long-abandoned Meyer Township Schoolhouse, right along Highway 2 east of Rugby a couple miles, and did some shooting. The school was founded two years in 1897 (two years before ND statehood) but has been closed since 1959! This school is a familiar landmark for any North Dakotan who has traversed the state on Highway 2 more than a few times. I've been intending to shoot this in winter (something about cold/snow/abandoned buildings that I like), but this morning with the fog really gave a different "feel" to the scene, with the sun rising in the background, beaming through and adding some warmth to the wetness.

An additional shot, taken further away (full view of school) and more from the left is also available for your consideration.

Image captured 8/5/19 with Pentax K-1 and DFA28-105 lens.

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
