Artist's Description

"See-Through Schoolhouse"
This is Lake Ibsen township school #2 in Benson County ND, and I have several shots of this location, spanning several years. I still can't resist getting "just one more shot" almost every time I pass by, usually on the way to somewhere else. On this day, I was returning from shooting at another location, and just happened to pass by the school in late evening. The light looked nice for infrared-spectrum work, so I repositioned myself so the side windows (and the front door) were aligned such that you can "see through" the school. This resulting image, with its soft infrared color palette, strongly contrasting textures, and two photobombing birds is one of my favorites of the entire trip!

Image captured 7/4/22 with infrared-modified (720nm) Pentax K3.

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
