Description
Sturgeon Bay Canal Lighthouse
This attractive red lighthouse, built in 1881, is found on the end of a long breakwater at the south side of the Sturgeon bay canal. The actual dug canal cuts through about a mile of the Door County peninsula, allowing ships to avoid the more treacherous route around the tip of Door called "Death's Door". The canal project was initially a private venture - sort of a "canal toll road"! The steel structure you see in these pic's is a "catwalk" to enable workers to reach the lighthouse even when waves are breaking over the top of breakwater. Can you imagine how terrifying it would be to walk the catwalk (almost 1/4 mile long!) in those conditions?!
The light was very harsh when I was there to photograph it a couple weeks ago, so I decided to "make lemonade" and take the harsh light to an even higher level by including the sun in the compositions, along with post-processing steps of partial B&W conversion, among other things. Another shot, from a slightly different spot and in vertical format, but similar style to this is available as well - just search for "Sturgeon" in my gallery to see it.
Image captured 8/28/21 with Pentax K-1 and DFA15-30 lens at 15mm.
