Artist's Description
"Sunset on the Hans Blegen Homestead"
A 1910 plat map reports that the site of this windmill and old grain bins (zoom in) near Churchs Ferry mark the farm homestead of a Norwegian Immigrant named Hans O. Blegen. Some additional sleuthing on a Norwegian geneology/history website tells me that he was born Feb 20, 1843 in Oppland, Norway and he immigrated to Olmsted county, Minnesota in 1880, followed by a move to Benson county in 1900, presumably to homestead this land/site. This location has been more or less inaccessable for over a decade, due to rising floodwaters of Devils Lake - I was photographing from old Highway 281, which itself had to be abandoned due to water inundation all along this area, but has now resurfaced as the lake waters receding. So I was shooting "abandoned from abandoned".
Image captured Oct 29, 2021 with Pentax K-1 and DA*200mm lens.
About Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
