Artist's Description

"Sunset Soliloquy" - John Deere combine harvesting beans at sunset

Pictured here is my brother in a John Deere S790 combine with a 45' flex draper header, harvesting edible beans ("black turtles") about 10 minutes after sun had set but cloud bank was still lit up brilliantly (the color is not "faked"!). I shot this with a long 300mm lens, so the combine is about 1/4 mile away, and only a small section of the sky is visible.

Side story is kinda funny, I had quit for the day (trucking for him) and was eating supper when he called me on my cell phone and said “the sky is pretty amazing”, so I jumped in the car, zipped right out there, shot this, and was back home in ten minutes!

Image captured 10/17/22 with Pentax K-1 and DA*300mm lens.

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
