Artist's Description

"Moonrise at the Big Coulee"
This is the Big Coulee Lutheran church (long-abandoned) in a very remote area of Ramsey County, ND. If you zoom in, you can see it partially spelled out on the ornate metal entry arch (between trees, and missing the "I") which is common feature of many old rural churches. I positioned myself carefully beforehand using a software/GPS program so the moon would in the desired position, and set up my tripod in the back of the pickup truck to gain elevation. The wind was whipping and it was only about 45 degrees, so it was challenging shot with camera motion (wind and truck suspension), long shutter speed, and stiff fingers (I forgot to bring a coat!). I also took later shot of the moon, positioned higher in scene and with reflected moonlight in water (more "romantic" image, vs. this one which is edgier). The latter shot is also available - search for same title.
Image captured with Pentax K-1 and DA*200mm lens on 5/7/20.

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
