"The Old Buchta Place" - abandoned homestead on ND prairie with Simmental cattle grazing
As near as I can tell (from a 1929 plat map), this was the farmhouse residence of Frank Buchta, nestled in the buttes south of Leeds in Benson County, North Dakota. A 1910 plat map suggests it was originally homesteaded by an A.E. Buttz, but no home was there at that time. I've been meaning to get a shot of this place for a while, as I've been by it many times, but it has been hidden in shadows. Lighting on this particular morning was still a bit difficult (I need to get up still a little bit earlier when the light is coming in at a very low angle), but I got a pleasing image, I think, thanks to Travis Stuberg’s beautiful cattle grazing in foreground.

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
