Artist's Description

"Tucked in for the Night" - Veum Tobacco Harvest Series 1 of 4
Loaded tobacco wagon, tucked in to the shed before rain comes.
Many may not realize, but this area around Stoughton (Dane County, Wisconsin) produces quite a lot of tobacco (variety for chewing, not smoking), going back a hundred years or more. I had to good fortune to notice this tobacco harvest, ongoing, at the Veum farm, and I stopped by. Every part of growing tobacco is very labor-intensive, but it continues to be a good cash-crop for local farmers who still hold contracts to sell. These folks were all so friendly and hospitible, answering questions (thanks Shelby!) and allowing me to photograph the harvest action, drying shed, and even inviting me for beers after they finished for the day! Farmers are good folk...
Images captured 8/20 and 8/21/22.

About Peter Herman

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
