I had this location in Barnes county, ND, near Valley City "starred" on my google map for quite a while, so took the opportunity to swing by and photograph it during a recent trip on a VERY hot day in early June (100F!). According to Wikipedia Green Consolidated School near Valley City, North Dakota, United States, "is the best preserved open country consolidated school in North Dakota." It served during 1916 to 1974, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. It now serves as a community center, and can see more at the facebook page linked in location as well as forum article clipped as comment.
I sat in the grass by the playground for a bit, and if I let mind drift, I could almost hear the sound of children playing on the still-functional swings, teeter-totters, and merry-go-round. For wintertime play, there was a “micro gymnasium” in basement!

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
