Artist's Description

Using various "swirl brush" distortions, I manipulated the milky way into a sort of Van Gogh variation of his famous "The Starry Night" painting. Source image (unmodified) is also available here - original description was:

While in ND last week, I took advantage of the low light-pollution levels there to do some Milky Way "core" shooting (summer is when the core of our galaxy is visible in the southern sky, with milky way reaching straight upwards, visible from dark sites). Here, you see the milky way reaching for the heavens (can the heavens reach for themselves?), centered between a pair of cairns built by my family on a rock pile just that afternoon in the Kenner coulee pasture. Image was shot with an ultra-wide lens, so the top of the image extends well past "overhead". If you click and zoom way in, you'll even see our neighbor galaxy, Andromeda, (the elongated fuzzy thing) captured inadvertently in the upper-left part of image! This is an extreme depth of field image...

Peter Herman

Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
