Description
"Church Rock"
This striking solitary 200' tall dome-shaped sandstone formation is in southern Utah just off US191 south of Moab, UT. The La Sal mountain range can be seen in the background to north. The name came from a utopian community ("Home of Truth") founded by spiritualist Marie Ogden in the 1930's, who claimed this rock was "the spiritual center of the universe". Allegedly, the group planned to hollow out the rock to build a church inside, and if you zoom in, you'll see the opening for the beginnings of that effort that were later expanded by owner/rancher (Claud Young) who expanded the cave to store salt and cattle feed.
Captured on March 21, 2016
A unique rock formation stands prominent against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and a partly cloudy sky. Dry vegetation fills the foreground, offering a contrast between the arid landscape and the distant alpine scenery.
