"Stoughton Tornado Tree in Infrared"
This is the beloved Stoughton "Tornado Tree" on its grassy knoll adjacent a corn field on north side of town. This oak tree is a survivor of the major tornado in 2005 that tore through the northern side of town. It practically shredded this tree, ripping all its major limbs off, but now, 17 years later, it is recovering nicely, sending new growth out of every possible spot! The image is captured in the invisible (to our eye) infrared spectrum, so the tree "glows" in reflected afternoon sunlight (leaves reflect the infrared color spectrum above about 700 nm wavelength, which the camera is seeing with dark filter). Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during "golden hour", searching for that magic light...
