Description
"Late Bloomers 1 of 2" - Prairie Crocus on coulee hill, after blooming
Due to the very cold spring in North Dakota this year, this is the latest I remember prairie crocus blooming. Usually they've bloomed about a month or more sooner (as I recall). Anyway, I learned something new- after the flower is done blooming and the sepals fall off, the pistils create a "new" flower that looks kind of like a little exploding firework that is as pretty as the original bloom (zoom in on these!)! A seed is attached to each plume. I have uploaded two examples to my gallery - search "late bloomer" to see both!
Image captured 5/22/22 on my favorite "crocus hill" in Benson County, ND, near Brinsmade, with Pentax K-1 and DFA50mm macro lens.
